Don't really know why, but they terrify me. Especially the ones which clog the inside of the pill bottles. I can't take them out by myself, I have to have someone else do it. When I do touch them, I shudder and squeal. It makes me feel "yucky" Eww. They thought of them is making me shudder........

I saw a lady on TV who also said she was terrified of cotton balls, she said it reminded her of death and she thought it was the most digusting thing EVER, and she even felt like the cotton was going to kill her if she let it.
    you are not alone.

My kids make fun of me. I actually have gotten to the point where I CAN if I have to remove the things myself, but I do avoid it. As with other phobias, I find it's the self-talk that gets you through. I consider this one somewhat conquered. I have others which aren't. I can't do up an escalator. I feel the empty space behind me and I KNOW I will fall.

when I was little the ONLY person who made fun of my doll phobia was my mom :-/
one time, I was walking VERY distracted in a toy store and found myself in the middle of the DOLL isle (OMG!), I completely FREAKED OUT! but before I just colapsed there, I closed my eyes and beagan to RUN!
NOW, that's what I do, I close my eyes and take deep breaths and think about something else when I'm near a doll, it helps a lot, but when it comes to clowns the only thing I think that would EVER help me would be to KICK 'em in the ass!
        there... I feel better now.
I'm also afraid of heights, and it's VERY hard for me to go up one of those elevators with windows all around, I feel like the elevator is just gonna GO DOWN and take me with it :-P

Have you tried turning sideways on the escalator?
Don't turn all the way around or you'll get a surprise at the end.

How do you find empty stair space qualitatively different from empty escalator space?

I wouldn't say that I have a "phobia" of stairs or escalators, but I do have a bit of an apprehension or fear (but I would rather take them, than an elevator)...

I do not differenciate between the two empty spaces, necessarily. However, escalators tend to go up much higher than stairs, and therefore seem more dangerous. Also, stairs are firmer under the feet and just "feel" more stable.
